RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- Friends and family of Dylan Wall, the 23-year-old UPS worker who was shot and killed in downtown Raleigh in 2021, are sharing their anxiety and concern ahead of his accused killer's next court appearance.
It's been an unimaginably difficult several years for them, "There’s so many emotions that go with this, it’s almost impossible to describe," said Aly Wilhelm-Olsen, a family friend.
In February 2021, Wall of Knightdale was out working when he was shot multiple times and killed.
"Literally I stood in the kitchen when I got the call and asked if they were joking," Wilhelm-Olsen said.
She says Dylan was like a nephew.
"Oh my goodness, Dylan was a riot. Always cracking jokes, always having fun. He was just, that beautiful red hair and those eyes and just a good all-around guy," Wilhelm-Olsen said.
Wall's accused killer, Stephen Bynem is expected to be back in court Friday morning, but Wall's family has no idea what to expect.
"The uncertainty is insane."
Court documents from October signal a potential insanity defense, with a pretrial motion stating Bynem went through several evaluations. The document states that the reports agree he is suffering a serious mental illness.
"It’s heartbreaking to not know if this guy is going to serve any time," said Wilhelm-Olsen.
The Chief Public Defender in Wake County told CBS 17 earlier this week that the criminal matter is expected to be resolved on Friday.
"When you have that kind of situation going on, your brain and your heart, we just don’t know what to do. The emotions are overloading," Wilhelm-Olsen explained.
