GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Shaquanna Hudson's family is still searching for answers nearly two years after she was found killed.

The mom of four and her boyfriend were shot and killed in her home in Greensboro in the summer of 2018.

It's a case that caught the community's attention. In fact, the Crime Stoppers reward for information continues to climb. Thanks to anonymous donors, the reward is now $3,625.

"It makes me feel good that someone still loves and cares enough for her to do that, you know that they want answers also too and they miss her," said Lelia Hudson, Shaquanna's mom.

Shaquanna Hudson's four children are now in the care of their grandmother.

"Sleepless nights, hurting, heartaches, like I said before several times, this feeling, this pain that I have and this grief that I'm going through, I'd never wish this on anyone else at all," Lelia Hudson said.

A grief that grew during the holidays. One of Shaquanna's daughters made sure to Photoshop her in their Christmas photo.

"She has her days too, as well as her other siblings that they don't want to do it no more, they want to give up. She just wants to give up some days, but she keeps pushing," Lelia Hudson said.

Lelia's granddaughters are finding strength on the basketball court.

"I think about my daughter when I come here, some games that she came to see her kids play at school, it's been very hard," Lelia Hudson said.

Sometimes it's hard for Lelia to watch from the sidelines when her grandchildren are missing their biggest cheerleader.

"I know she's here in spirit but I still want her here you know where I can see her and hold her that way she can cheer them on," Lelia Hudson said.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A Greensboro mom could face the death penalty. Brittany McKinney, 28, faced a judge for the first time on Thursday, after police say she shot and killed three people Wednesday morning.

She didn't say a word during the brief hearing.

FOX8 spoke with McKinney's sister and mother on Wednesday and Thursday. They tell FOX8 it's an extremely difficult time and truly tragic for the entire family.

FOX8 also spoke with someone who says they were with McKinney just minutes after the crimes took place.

Veronica Hayes was with McKinney less than 30 minutes after investigators say McKinney shot and killed her 10-year-old daughter Mkenzie, 2-year-old niece Serenity, and 61-year-old Jerry Griffin, who was living with the family on Sweet Birch Drive.

Greensboro police say McKinney was involved in a crash on Wendover Avenue, where she hit a power pole and Hayes' car, just moments after the killings allegedly took place.

"I was just trying to make sure she was OK, not knowing what had happened moments before," Hayes said. "She grabbed my hoodie and said, 'I don't want you to be involved.' She said, 'Sis, I don't want you to be involved.'"

"I think she was a little disoriented at that point," Hayes said.

Also happening in that timeframe, a heart-wrenching phone call from McKinney to her sister.

"She said, 'I killed everybody. I shot everybody in the house,'" said Delilah Merritt, McKinney's sister. "She's like, 'My baby, my baby, I shot my baby.' And then I said, 'Where's Serenity?' and she said, 'I shot her too.'"

That's when Merritt knew something was wrong and called for a welfare check on McKinney's home.

"I never thought she would do something like this," she said.

Lisa Campos and her daughter Laila still can't believe what happened a few houses down from them.

"They would play in the front of my house and stuff," Campos said.

Laila and Mkenzie rode the bus together to George C. Simkins Jr. Elementary School.

"We just became friends and she was really nice to me," Laila said. "I'm going to miss her."

It's a sentiment echoing throughout the neighborhood.

"I got balloons. It's a sad situation, just very sad," said Gina Baldwin, a neighbor. "I hate that this happened."

A small mailbox makeshift memorial has popped up outside of where tragedy struck.

There, friends and neighbors have put up pictures, cards, flowers and a bundle of purple balloons.

The grieving process for family and friends is only just beginning.

"I didn't want to believe it," Merritt said. "I still don't."

Merritt tells FOX8 she thinks her sister was just overwhelmed with life and it just became too hard for her.

FOX8 is told Guilford County Schools will be providing crisis counselors for students at Simkins Elementary School on Monday.

McKinney is being held without bond and is expected to be back in court on Feb. 11.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Winston-Salem police are starting a homicide investigation after a woman was found dead in her home Tuesday, according to a Winston-Salem Police Department news release.

Around 7:25 p.m., officers began a missing person investigation related to the disappearance of 46-year-old Toni Renee Handy. She last seen on Friday at the Murphy Express on 3820 Oxford Station Way where she worked.

As the investigation into Handy’s disappearance progressed, evidence of foul play was developed and detectives with the Winston-Salem Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division began investigating.

During that investigation, Christopher Joel Mock, 45, of Winston-Salem, became a subject of interest.

On Tuesday afternoon, Mock was taken to the hospital after a crash that ended in a deputy-involved shooting, according to Christina Howell with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened in 2500 block of Lewisville-Clemmons Road.

At about 1:50 p.m., deputies on routine patrol saw a vehicle that matched the description of a vehicle associated with Handy's missing person's case.

When deputies tried to stop the vehicle, the driver refused, so they pursued him. Four civilians were involved in the crash that ended with a deputy-involved shooting.

Mock was taken to the hospital where he later died. The gun was recovered at the scene.

The deputy involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Meanwhile, detectives with the WSPD executed a search warrant at Handy's home in Winston-Salem.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the body of Handy was found inside the home, police say.

A next of kin for Handy has been notified of her death. This matter is now being investigated by officers as a homicide.

Authorities are asking that anyone with information regarding this investigation contact the Winston-Salem Police Department at (336) 773-7700 or CrimeStoppers at (336) 727-2800. CrimeStoppers may also be contacted via “Crime Stoppers of Winston Salem Forsyth County” on Facebook.

‘She didn’t deserve what he did to her’: Daughter of slain Winston-Salem woman reveals messages sent by her alleged killer

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- So many questions remain unanswered for the family of Toni Handy, including whether the information her alleged killer, Christopher Mock, was sending them was true or not.

The mother of five children and seven grandchildren was found brutally killed inside her Winston-Salem home Tuesday morning; less than 24 hours after a missing person report was filed.

“She didn’t deserve what he did to her, at all,” her daughter Gidget Dunlap said.

Handy was last seen Friday evening leaving work at Murphy Express gas station in Winston-Salem. The next afternoon she spoke to Dunlap on the phone, having what would be their last conversation.

“It was my mom, she was saying she was going into work. She would call me when she got off work. She loved me, and then bye,” Dunlap recalled. The conversation lasted around one minute.

That night Dunlap, nor any other family members hear from Handy.

Sunday afternoon, following a string of attempts to call and message her mother, Dunlap received a Facebook message from her mother’s account. However, it was not from her mother, but from her boyfriend Mock.

The message read: “Sorry Gidget, I have your mom’s phone. Mine’s broken, and we’re fishing.”

Dunlap responded with: “Okay, I just haven’t heard from her. Call me when you get back to service.”

Mock: “... I will have her call you when I get back to the truck.”

When night came and went, Dunlap knew something was wrong.

She sent another series of messages to her mother’s Facebook account threatening to call the police unless she heard from her mother.

Monday afternoon, Mock responded, still using Handy’s Facebook.

The message read: “Hey, it’s me again. We went to be tested for [coronavirus]. Your mother tested positive initially, and they came and said it was immediately lockdown. ... She started running her mouth, now they have her quarantined, and me, in holding. We had to fill out all kinds of paperwork.”

Dunlap knew something was wrong and filed a missing persons report with Winston-Salem police.

On Tuesday, authorities found Mock driving Handy's truck through Clemmons. When deputies tried to stop the vehicle, the driver refused, so they pursued him. Four civilians were involved in the crash that ended with a deputy-involved shooting.

Mock was taken to the hospital where he later died.

“I went down there in hopes that maybe she was with him,” Dunlap explained.

Police would later find her mother dead inside her home along Kimball Lane.

Her family has not been allowed inside to remove any of her belongings. Detectives are waiting for an autopsy to determine exactly how she was killed.

“I just want to know why,” Dunlap said.

As they wait for more answers, they are having to plan a funeral with many restrictions.

Not only was coronavirus used to cover up her death, but it has caused financial strains on planning Handy's funeral.

Only a small amount of family will be able to attend as well.
