HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) -- High Point police are using neighborhood canvassing to educate people about domestic violence.
Police and representatives with the Guilford County Family Justice Center were back at the High Point apartment complex where 19-year-old High Point University student Gianna Delgado was killed.
Instead of focusing solely on new leads, police and advocates for domestic violence victims knocked on doors and provided flyers that included information on how to report cases of domestic violence.
Police say Delgado was strangled to death inside the apartment she shared on Pallas Way with boyfriend Michael Cadogan.
“Strangulation is one of the most lethal forms of domestic violence and what we say in our work is it’s the last warning shot, so if someone is experiencing strangulation and their hands [are] around your neck that is that person saying I control you and I can take your life,” Guilford County Family Justice Center Director Catherine Johnson said.
Cadogan, 24, faces a first-degree murder charge in Delgado’s death.
The flyers also included a short paragraph about Delgado’s murder to help clear up any misinformation in the community.
“There’s a lot of rumors. When people don't know the information and the gaps, sometimes they make up their own and ultimately that hinders our investigation,” Supervisor of the High Point Police Department Violent Crimes Unit Lt. BJ MacFarland said.
