HIGH POINT, N.C. — The man who police say fatally shot his wife and prompted an hours-long standoff at a home in High Point had his bond lowered during a court appearance Friday.

Alvin Nathanael Smith, 30, turned himself in to police on May 8.

During a court appearance Friday, his bond was lowered to $750,000. Previously, Smith had been denied bond.

Police were called to a domestic situation at 8:18 p.m. May 7 in the 1800 block of Blain Street.

When two officers approached the home and knocked on the door, they heard a disturbance coming from the backyard and gunshots soon followed.

The officers thought someone may be firing at them and when they checked in the backyard, they found 33-year-old Elizabeth L. Smith outside the home with her two children, ages 3 and 9.

They were able to move the children to safety and provide aid to Elizabeth Smith. She was taken to Moses Cone Memorial Hospital where she later died.

Officers believed Alvin Smith was still inside the home, so they surrounded the residence and negotiators were called to the scene.

At about 4 a.m., the High Point Tactical Team searched the home and determined that Smith was no longer inside.

Smith was found sitting in the lobby of the High Point Police Department on May 8. He has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

In court Friday, the 9-year-old said in a statement, “I saw daddy shoot mommy.”

Anyone with additional information on the crime is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at (336) 889-4000.
