GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Police are seeking the public's assistance in identifying a homicide victim found in Greensboro.

Just after 12:30 p.m. on Monday, police were called out to the Osprey Trail along Yanceyville Road. Someone fishing in the area spotted the body down an embankment. Yanceyville Road was shut down for several hours while police investigated.

The victim is described by police as a Black man in his late teens to mid-to-late 20s. He died wearing a red zip-up hoodie, dark sweatpants and slide-style shoes.

Police said he had one gunshot wound but other possible injuries were unclear.

Community members react

“I just think it is sad that there is so much violence in the world,” said Cathy Yonaitis, who lives in Greensboro. She comes to the trails multiple times a week. “I am shocked because this is such a peaceful beautiful area and I walk here a lot with my dog and sometimes my husband and it is just really sad,” Yonaitis said.

Community members are frustrated that homicides continue to happen in Greensboro, even in the more isolated areas.

“I think it is one of those things people should have the knowledge of what is going on and stuff so I am actually glad to know that prior to going out here and riding because I think that is something people should be aware of,” said Ben Pawlik.

Bike riders and walkers say they will still use the trails, but it has sparked a lot of questions.

“It runs through your mind and it makes you think, are you safe? If the person that is involved is still at large and around, it definitely is something you got to be mindful of,” Pawlik said. “I won’t forget hearing something like that happened out here."

Anyone who knows the identity of this man is asked to call Greensboro Police Department.
